Feeding the birds? Look no feather.

These winter warmers for the birds are sure to keep the birds singing all year around.

To ensure that you are feeding the birds the right things here's your checklist of do’s and dont’s to bird feeding this winter:

In the colder weather birds are looking for dry food such as

  • Strings of plain popcorn and/or dried fruit (thread onto cotton using a sewing needle)
  • Whole fruit such as apples and pears
  • Black oil Sunflower seeds
  • Cooked rice, brown or white (without salt added)
  • Small muffins, biscuits and pieces of fruit cake crumbled or left whole
  • Mild grated cheese
  • Dry porridge oats
  • Potato (jacket, boiled, roast and even mashed potatoes are suitable)
  • Peanut Butter
  • Sugar water (half a cup of sugar and a full hot water to dissolve, then add cold water to make a litre) - DO NOT use honey in your sugar water because it attracts bees

Things to avoid:

  • Any food that has been cooked in fats
  • Chocolate
  • Caffeine
  • Avocado
  • Peanuts
  • Bread (mouldy or stale are really bad)
